Best tips for a functional home office

Furnishing a home office is becoming an increasingly widespread need, thanks to the success of smart working. In fact, more and more companies are realizing that smart work makes employees more productive. In addition, there are also many people who work on their own projects or companies, from home.

That is why it is useful to know how to organize the best possible home office. Because having the tools to work well and being surrounded by a comfortable and optimal environment makes our work more fruitful and fulfilling.

Ideas for furnishing your home office

Executive chair for office

Furnishing a home office can mean reserving an entire room for work activities, or, if space is limited, find a suitable corner to be used as an office.

In both cases it is important to make the space reserved for work a pleasant place with all comforts, since we will spend several hours a day in it.

If you have an entire room for your home office

If you are lucky enough to have an entire room at your disposal to be used as an office, this will come in handy if your job requires you to receive customers. In this case it is better to choose a room located in a quiet area of the house, so that there are not too many noises. It is also important that it is an isolated room, which is accessed through the entrance, a corridor, or stairs, so that customers do not have to come into contact with a private dimension of the house.

An idea may also be to create an office in the attic, which is certainly the most isolated and quiet room in the house. It also has the charm of being a more hidden environment, with a pitched roof and a view from above.

How to furnish a home office?

Carpet for office area

First of all, we need to think of aesthetically pleasing and not too extravagant furnishings, so as to put any customers at ease. We must first of all like the furniture, as it is essential to create an environment that relaxes us and stimulates our mental energies.

The essential elements in an office are:

  • a spacious desk, preferably with drawers for storing documents and other items,
  • an ergonomic chair, which must be chosen very carefully: correct posture while working is essential to not have back pain and other pains related to too much sedentary lifestyle,
  • a pair of comfortable and designer chairs for our customers,
  • a library, in which to store the documents and books that we need, but also valuable or cherished volumes, which contribute to creating a positive image of your professionality and your work,
  • a carpet, which makes the room look much cozier,
  • a couple of paintings, to make the room look more refined,
  • a beautiful plant, or even more than one, which stimulate our mental balance
  • correct lighting, in order not to tire our eyes and work better: first of all a good natural light, which must possibly come from the sides of the PC screen and not from in front or behind us, also assisted by a desk lamp when it's dark outside.

To these you can add other elements of furniture according to your taste in design or your personal needs, such as a relaxation corner consisting of a table and armchairs, or a bar corner to offer drinks to customers.

Create an office in a corner of the house

If you do not have an extra room available for your home office, you will have to create a corner inside another room, and come up with a creative solution that will suit your needs.

The first thing to decide is where to place our mini office.

The most practical choice is to use a lounge area, but some prefer to carve out a space in the bedroom, which is quieter and less crowded than the living area.

In fact, in the living room we run the risk of being disturbed by the noises of the kitchen or by the passage of children, while the bedroom remains more private. However, there are cons: using the room we use for relaxation to work could adversely affect our rest.

The second thing to do is to choose the right furniture, starting from the assumption that we cannot do without some essential elements:

  • a small desk
  • a comfortable and ergonomic chair
  • shelves to place documents and books

The style of the furniture depends on your personal taste. They can be classic, modern, minimal, whimsical.

Office desk

Finally, complete the furnishings of the office corner with additional, more personal furnishings: such as a chalk board, a picture, a particular pen holder. Are you looking for some original ideas for the home office? Here are a few.

  • Face the wall. It sounds like the opposite of what you should do, but it's actually a great way to isolate yourself from the rest of the room. Face the wall and confine your office space to that wall, even better if in a corner. This way you won't see what's going on behind you, and you’ll focus more on your work.
  • Surround yourself with plants. Enrich the office corner with plants of various species and sizes. Plants have a beneficial effect both on our body, thanks to the oxygen they produce, and on our mind. In fact, they help us concentrate, feel well balanced and full of energy.
  • Divide the space with a library. Look for some gimmick to divide the mini office from the rest of the room. You can use plants, or a bookcase to be placed as a room divider. Among other things, it would be useful to have at hand the books and documents that you use during work. This way you would have a secluded corner well divided from the rest of the environment without being confined between walls.
  • Use an extendable desk. A smart idea for the desk of a small home office is to use an extendable console. When closed it is a perfect mini desk, about 35 x 17 inches. When you’ll have guests, you will be able to use it as a table, to seat up to 14 people altogether.
